The Non-Thermal Plasma Research Lab (NTPRL) carries extensive theoretical and applied research in the fields of plasma dynamics, plasma discharge, pulsed energy sources as well as advanced spectral diagnostics. Our researchers focus on non-thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure and how it interacts with substrates for a variety of applications. These kind of discharges induce intense conditions such as high electric fields as well as chemically reactive species.

We focus on surface discharges, DBD discharges, Corona discharges and on profiling their fundamental properties. The goal is to deepen our understanding of these types of plasmas and their interaction with complex targets so that they can be used in applications such as food packaging, agronomy, horticulture and others. To ensure that insights we gather have real-world relevance, we engage with a range of researchers, such as biochemists, biologists or engineers.

Our Story So Far

Over the years, the research activity has been broad, aiming to develop non-thermal plasma sources, to diagnose plasma and to develop several applications of plasma, such as surface modification and dye degradation. Nowadays, research interests in the laboratory rely on plasma-liquid interactions. Activated water applications, bacterial inactivation, increased antioxidant therapeutic potential, improved germination rate as a result of non-thermal plasma treatments are being deeply explored.
